The Weighted Grade Formula (With a Worked Example)
Every weighted grade comes from one short formula:
Weighted grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ Σ weight
In plain English: multiply each category's score by its weight, add those products, and divide by the sum of the weights. Say you have Homework at 92% (weight 20), Quizzes at 85% (weight 15), Exams at 88% (weight 50), and Participation at 95% (weight 15). Your weighted grade is:
(92×20 + 85×15 + 88×50 + 95×15) ÷ (20 + 15 + 50 + 15) = (1840 + 1275 + 4400 + 1425) ÷ 100 = 8940 ÷ 100 = 89.4% → B+
Notice it's 89.4%, not 89% — the extra decimal is the kind of thing a mental estimate loses but a letter-grade boundary can hinge on. How Weighted Grades Are Calculated (the Canvas Group Method)
Canvas — and most learning systems — build your grade from weighted assignment groups. Every assignment belongs to a group (Homework, Labs, Exams…), and each group is assigned a percentage of your final grade.
